a. A fine example of local Masonry Vernacular architecture, this two-story
house is noteworthy for its Craftsman style details and extensive use
of native oolitic limestone. Alphonso Beneby, a black stonemason who emigrated
from the Bahamas, built the house. Beneby was still actively plying his
trade in the 1980s. Dr. Ayars was a physician and civic leader who served
as a member of the Dade County School Board and as councilman and city
commissioner when Coconut Grove was an independent municipality.
