a. This large Mediterranean Revival style building replaced an earlier
frame church as the home of one of Miami's oldest African-American congregations.
Although construction began before the Great Depression, work proceeded
as finances permitted and the church was eventually completed in 1941.
The church is also noteworthy for its association with the Reverend J.
R. Evans, a prominent community activist. Mt. Zion Baptist Church was
listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
