a. The 11-story City National Bank Building is noteworthy for both its
classically-inspired commercial architecture and its associations with
Miami's chaotic economy during the 1920s and 1930s. The Miami Bank and
Trust Company began construction on the building, but the bank collapsed
during the Bust of 1926. The J.C. Penney City National Bank and Trust
Company took over the building as it was nearing completion. City National
Bank failed during the Great Depression. The City National Bank Building
was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
