Today, only the prominent central tower of the Sears, Roebuck and Company
building remains as part of the new Performing Arts Center. As an early
example of the Art Deco style, the pronounced tower features engaged fluted
piers and low relief ornamentation typical of the architecture of the
period. This building's location was significant in developing a separate
commercial district north of downtown Miami, and was directly responsible
for encouraging commercial growth along Biscayne Boulevard in the late
1920s and early 1930s.
