a. Set among extensive formal gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay, Vizcaya
is an American realization of an Italian Renaissance villa and one of
Miami's architectural masterpieces. Painter/designer Paul Chalfin advised
industrialist James Deering on all aspects of the winter home's decoration,
including furnishings, fixtures, and artwork. The house and gardens are
administered by Miami-Dade County and are open to the public as a museum.
Villa Vizcaya was listed in the National Register of Historic Places
in 1970, and also designated a National Historic Landmark, the nation's
highest honor, in 1994.
