:: Liberty
Square Wall Fragment b. “The Wall” was constructed in the late 1930’s in conjunction with the construction of the Liberty Square housing development, Florida’s first government-subsidized public housing complex. The original seven foot concrete wall functioned as a barrier separating the Liberty Square Housing Development to the west of NW 12th Avenue from the established white neighborhood to the east. Today’s remnants of the Liberty Square wall serve as a reminder of the harsh segregationist laws of the “Jim Crow” era, and as a testament to the heroic civil rights struggles fought against discrimination.
