a. Rendering of the First Miami High School following its proposed rehabilitation.
The first high school classes in Miami met in the original grammar school
located at NE 1st Avenue between 8th and 9th Streets. Faced with overcrowding,
the School Board authorized construction of a building for the high school
students in 1905. The two-room, frame bungalow was constructed directly
behind the grammar school. In 1911, a new school opened that replaced
both the grammar school and that first high school building. The bungalow
was moved down Biscayne Bay to become Southside Elementary School. By
1914, when a new Southside Elementary School was built, the old building
was converted into a residence. Miraculously, the building survived, but
faced demolition. Due to a campaign led by the City of Miami, Miami High
School alumni, and Dade Heritage Trust, the building was moved to Southside
Park in 2003 and is currently awaiting rehabilitation.
